Mickey Nielson is lonely. Even she knows that. Living in the liminal summer between her last year of high school and first year of college, she spends her time ringing up groceries and riding her bike around the rusting village of Lakeshade. She prefers it this way, though. It’s easiest to keep to herself.

One evening, she stumbles across an old bridge on the edge of town. On the other side of it, a road sign welcomes her to Jackalope, MI. Population: 537. She's never heard of it, despite living in Lakeshade her entire life. Crossing the bridge reveals to her a world so similar to her own, yet completely different: diners open 24/7 and staffed by ghosts, trails in the wood that lead to nothing, the horn of a train passing on long-dead tracks.

Mickey's arrival does not go unnoticed, especially not when a confusing accident connects her with a group of friends the town calls The Pack. How did Mickey arrive in Jackalope, where visitors can never seem to make it past the bridge? Why is she suddenly, inextricably connected to the town? Could her identity have anything to do with the recent string of disappearances?
